The Old Pinakothek
The Old Pinakothek (Alte Pinakothek) was built by Leo von Klenze between 1826 and 1836 at the request of King Ludwig I. It houses one of the world's most important and oldest collections of paintings with European masterpieces from the 14th to the end of the 18th Century.
The New Pinakothek
The New Pinakothek (Neue Pinakothek), re-opened in 1981 as a modern museum building, also goes back to Ludwig I's passion for collecting. The leading representatives of Early Romanticism, such as Caspar David Friedrich and the French avant garde with Cezanne, Manet, Corot, Coubet, hang next to works by Goya, Gainsborough, Leibl and Spitzweg.
